Mushroom Foraging Course (from Susana Trilling)
Due to popular demand we are adding a second Mushroom Foraging Course this summer!
Only 6 spots left! Escape the summer heat and join Susana Trilling for a Mushroom Foraging Adventure in the Sierra Norte region of Oaxaca, Mexico.
We will spend 3 days hiking through the breathtaking pine forests of the Sierra Norte searching for seasonal mushrooms, guided by a local mycologist and spend our nights in rustic but charming cabins.
We'll cook our found mushrooms in the forest kitchen of our dear friend Doņa Lucia, catch and cook trout from her pond, participate in Oaxacan traditional medicine rituals, and visit a local Zapotec family who craft beautiful vegetable dyed weavings.
On the last day of our tour, we descend from the Sierra region to prepare our farewell 6-course meal of mushroom based dishes - even dessert! - at the beautiful Rancho Aurora, home to Seasons of My Heart Cooking school.
This relaxing summer getaway is not to be missed!

Upcoming Mexican Fungus Fairs
(from Alan Rockerfeller)
There are two excellent fungus fairs coming up in Mexico. If you want to
travel to Mexico for mushrooms, either fair would be a great reason to come. Both fairs have a very friendly atmosphere and they like people
from the US who come to see their mushrooms.
I'll be showing up in Senguio, Michoacan a few days early to collect for
the fair, if anyone would like to help collect that would be great. This year the town of Senguio has donated one of the vendor stalls to me to set
up a mushroom ID / microscopy table.
The Senguio fair is free (run by the city) and there are some hotels
really close to the fair. The Oaxaca fair costs 600 pesos ($50) and includes food and lodging. It is run by a tourism company.
I might show up at the Oaxaca fair early to hunt as well, but hunting is a
bigger part of that fair so itīs less important to collect mushrooms for display. The first day of the Oaxaca fair everyone splits up into groups
and collects as many species as possible. In the afternoon they lay out all the species on blankets and the judges count the number of species to
decide which group wins. I'll be one of the judges again this year.
The Senguio fair is more informal / less structured. I'll be leading group forays both Saturday and Sunday.

Both fairs are in relatively safe parts of Mexico. To get to the Oaxaca fair you can fly into Oaxaca City and take a bus to the fair.
To get to the Michoacan fair you can fly into Mexico City or Morelos, and take a bus to the fair. You'll need a car if you want to go mushroom hunting after the fairs, but not for the fair itself.
If you have any questions about the fairs, send me an email: alanrockefeller (at) gmail.comOaxaca Fair: July 20 & 21
Senguio Fair: August 16 - 18
